Search Engine Optimizer vs Programmer
In the world of Search Engine Optimization, there’s really nothing more frustrating than working with programmers. Remember a few things: the programmer isn’t wrong, lazy or ignorant. In fact, the programmer can be your best friend and ally, assuming you work to develop that relationship. Here are a few pointers that I have learned along the way.
Things not to do
- Call on the “Big Guy” and force down a memo threatening the programmers job. Don’t be a jerk, he built the website and without it you’d be jobless.
- Run to the programmers desk excitedly flailing your arms in the air and talking at high speeds, he’ll think you’re on crack and will only want to get rid of you quickly.
- Do not exclaim intelligence or greater knowledge of the internet, he’s already got some code in his mind on how to permanently delete you which makes him smarter.
- Stay away from phrases like “This needs to be done”, “You need to do this”, “my way”. You get the picture.
Things you should do
- Set up an appointment with the programmer and get his coffee/soda preference.
- Pick up coffee at Starbucks or stop into the corner store and grab his favorite soda. Caffeine is your programmers best friend.
- Sit with the programmer and talk about how well he’s been doing and how you are just fascinated by what he’s done.
- Talk about what you like about the website or software.
- Let him know that you are on equal ground, he knows his job, you know yours. He’ll respect you.
- Use phrases like “I need your assistance”, “Let’s work together on this”, “I heard about this and would like to know your take on it”. Get it yet?
When marketing people approach programmers with new ideas, there’s so much excitement from the marketer and the programmer sits there wondering what drug you are taking and labels you unfairly. This isn’t a good thing, you want to set yourself up on equal ground with him. You know your stuff, understand that he knows his stuff and you both will work in harmony.
One of the key things to remember if you want to keep this working relationship secure, when you approach the “Big Guy” with the sales figures from all the changes you made with the programmer. Please remember to let the “Big Guy” know that you couldn’t have done it without the programmers help. You’ll have made a best friend for life.
